The boys went out to Iowa to take on Union Dubuque FC and after a thrilling match they brought 3 points back to Illinois with a 4-2 win!
DKCU started the game off brightly with some good possession and a few shots on goal. But as the half wore on the Union Dubuque started to see more of the ball. Our back-line soaked up a lot of pressure and it looked like we would make into half-time at 0-0.
However, Dubuque won a free-kick at midfield and opted to play it quickly. The DKCU midfield was slow to react and Alex Herrera of Union Dubuque was able to fire off a 25-yard shot that took a deflection along the way and beat DeKalb County United keeper Javi Martinez to give Union the 1-0 lead.
The second half would provide much more entertainment.
Dekalb County United made several changes that sparked the team into life. DKCU began building some possession and momentum and eleven minutes into the half Ryan Salzar's deflected volley drew the away side level.
DKCU continued to apply the pressure and in the 67th minute Jose Gutierrez took on several defenders in the box and drew the penalty kick. Gutierrez kept his cool from the PK spot and smashed the ball down the center of the goal to make it 2-1 to Dekalb County United.
Shortly after, play halted for close to an hour with a lightening delay.
Both sides returned to the field and Union Dubuque was renewed. The home team pressured instantly with two corners before Brady Allen found space in the box and smashed home a late equalizer for Union.
However, United responded quickly and Ryan Salazar's big through was met by the faintest of touches from outsider defender Dusty Smith's head and redirected into the goal to give United a 3-2 lead.
Union attempted to find an equalizer and pushed numbers forward. This would ultimately cost them the game as a short corner was cleared by Ryan Salazar to striker Jimmy Matthew who used his pace to out run three Union defenders over 60 yards and stroked in United's fourth and final goal into an empty net.
It was an excellent display from DeKalb County United and a vital three points on the road. United now sit level on points in second place with Aurora Borealis. The two sides meet this Friday, June 8th, at 7:30pm CST in Mooseheart, IL.
